  • ArtsXchange Gallery 515 22nd Street South St. Petersburg, FL 33712

Part of our mission is to promote students and emerging artists. USF MFA student Jake Troyli is a Student member and just won an Emerging Artist Award from Creative Pinellas. We are thrilled to feature his work at St. Pete’s Second Saturday Artwalk.

Jake Troyli is an oil painter from St. Petersburg, Florida. A multi-ethnic man, Jake’s work is an examination of the condition and idea of Otherness. Utilizing a graphic style, a meticulous attention to detail and subtle levity to inform thoughtful subject matter, Jake provides through his work an ongoing investigation of what it means to be the “Other”, and what happens when the role is shifted. Jake is a prolific contributor to the local art scene, showing work throughout Pinellas and Hillsborough County, and has recently begun exhibiting in Orlando. He received his BFA from Lincoln Memorial University in 2013, and is currently pursuing his MFA in studio art from the University of South Florida.

Artist’s Statement

My work is about race, otherness, stereotypes, and my place in the history of painting. My work is about the commodification of struggle, outrage, and my body. What part do we all play in the continuation and proliferation of these systems of division? How does race function today? Utilizing a graphic style, meticulous attention to detail, and subtle levity to address these questions, I hope my paintings allow my viewer to unpack some answers for themselves, or be left with more questions.
