Ugh... the dreaded artist statement. Do you have one? Is it updated to reflect your latest work? It’s important to put out a strong artist statement that can be easily understood by all people and does your work justice.

Having a clear, concise artist statement is essential, particularly on applications for open-call exhibitions, for the gallery where your work is displayed, grant proposals, juries, art schools, residencies, exhibitions, academic reviews and most any other career-advancing opportunities. Let’s not forget the basics: your website, Instagram, Facebook, or even to post with your work at a show.

In this workshop your time will be dedicated to crafting and/or updating your message.  The workshop will include time to draft a current artist statement, review statements with a partner to obtain feedback, and an opportunity for follow up group support. We may discuss examples of artist statements, identify what makes them engaging and why.  The artist statement is a crucial piece of putting yourself out there as an artist and should change over time as you evolve and grow. This workshop is for artists that haven’t written a statement or have written many. Join us!

Bring a laptop or sketchbook to write your statement. [Suggestion- writing on the computer allows for easy editing and sentence restructuring/reordering]

Homework!! Only if you so choose... but these things WILL make this process much easier!

What inspires you as an artist? What medium do you work in and why? What is your artistic process like? What do you want to tell the people that view your work? Questions like these are the framework to building an artist statement. When a connection is made to a piece of artwork it is more likely to be purchased.  An artist statement is the opportunity to share with your audience and encourage them to look more deeply into your work and to learn about you as an artist.

Over the next few weeks, jot down notes about your work, list words that describe you and your work, verbs and adjectives that really strike to the heart of what it is you do and match the quality of your work, your inspiration and your life as an artist. Have fun with this! Look for a great quote from an artist, writer, philosopher, or theologian that you feel speaks to your process, form, or content. All these things can help to create an artist statement that excites and informs! Use the net for inspiration. Crack open all those art books you have collected over the years that describe artists and their work that inspire you.  Come prepared and make it easier!
