Mosaic 101
Level: Beginners
Prerequisites: None

Mosaic making is perhaps the oldest form of art having been practiced for 5000 years. Learn the basis of getting started making mosaics – the tiles (tesserae), the adhesives and the laying of the tiles.  It has changed radically through the millennia and the evolution continues.

Using a combination of lecture/slideshow, drawing, examples, and hands-on practice, students will learn to execute several common types of andamento. “Andamento” means the “flow” of the tiles, or “tessera” and is a technique of making mosaics since ancient Roman and Greek times.

Students will gain understanding and proficiency by discussing and then drawing several different types of andamento, and creating a 6” x 6” paper mosaic.

Once the basic knowledge has been gained, students will start to work on their own 18”x18” mosaic.  Students may either bring an image they would like to reproduce (keep it very simple) or the instructor will bring some patterns to use.

Sessions will be six consecutive Tuesdays, starting on February 8, and running through March 15. 2022 .  Classes will be from 6:30 – 8:30pm.  A short break will be scheduled.

All materials will be provided, but students should plan to bring these tools:  scissors, pencil, eraser, ruler, highlighter and notepad.

teresaAbout the Artist

Teresa Sullivan began making mosaics more than 20 years ago after a pivotal trip to Tunisia in 1997.  There she walked among the ruins of the Roman Empire and glimpsed the possibilities of this most ancient art form. So began her journey- learning this 5,000 year-old skill.  She studies with teachers throughout Italy, Mexico and the United States.
